Chronology
Fiery but feeling his age and illness, ailing filmmaker Leonard Fife (Richard Gere) wants to tell his life story, unfiltered, before it’s too late. As the director of acclaimed documentary exhibits, he has much to be proud of, but his avoidance of the Vietnam War and his past relationships harbor thorny truths. Ultimately choosing to reveal the truth and lies of his life and career, Leonard sits down for an extended taped interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), continuing with candid stories about his younger self (Jacob Elordi) in the 1960s and beyond. . At Leonard’s insistence, his indispensable wife and partner, Emma (Uma Thurman), overhears everything. Leonard’s successes are countered by his failures – objections held against the facts – and as the man is purged of much of the myth, Leonard must confront what’s left.
